Beaches

The Eastern Bay of Plenty is spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. From the safe golden sand beach of Ohope to excellent surfcasting and surfing spots right along this coast, to the secluded beach of Otarawairere, this is a beach lover's paradise.

Matata lies just north of Whakatane. There are beautiful beaches in the area making for great swimming and fishing spots. The drive just north of Matata along the beach front is spectacular as you pass along cliff faces fringed with pohutukawa trees.

Ohope Beach, just 6km over the hill from Whakatane has 11 kilometres of golden Pacific sand and safe swimming waters. West End, long a favourite with surfers, is also one of the access points to Otarawairere Beach, one of the most picturesque beaches in the Bay of Plenty. Otarawairere is often secluded, especially in the winter months, so you can enjoy beachcombing among the many rockpools and shells.

Ohope Beach is one of the safest surf beaches in the country. The large tidal area means the coast does not drop off steeply like many other beaches and the large expanse of white sands at low tide are a delight for walkers.  Travelling further east, Waiotahi beach, located between Ohope and Opotiki is stunning, isolated and offers safe swimming.  It is the perfect place to lose yourself in the crashing of the waves and the cries of the seagulls.

Te Kaha and Whanarua Bay’s superb beaches and bays offer great fishing, diving, swimming and boating. Picnics, native bush walks, waterfalls and glow-worms will be enjoyed by the whole family.
Well known to the kiwi camper, Waihau Bay offers everything from rocky inlets to sandy beaches. Facilities include a boat ramp and jetty, being an excellent place for boat fishing. There is also a lodge, petrol and postal facilities and fishing charter available.

Travelling to the furthest eastern reaches of the region, Oruaiti Beach offers a safe environment for swimming and fishing trips. There is also a holiday park close by with cabins, caravans, power and tent sites.
